Leadership Philosophy

My definition of leadership has changed a lot through my time as an undergraduate in University of Washington. To me, being a leader means being a person who is willing to step up and lead the group when needed and step back to empower others to grow. The key principles of leadership include being flexible, responsible, proactive and considerate to others.

My understanding of leadership has evolved a lot since high school. Back in high school I used to think that being a leader means being the best person in as many aspects as possible so that I will be a good model and authority. Yet through my various leadership experience in UW such as being a facilitator and writing tutor, I have learnt that being a leader means being the one who is willing to take actions in the direction that serves not only oneself but also the group. My idea about being a leader has loosened through time, and now I believe that there are many different types of leadership, and everyone can be a leader is some kind of capacity. It has become less egoistic and more empowering for others!
